There are plenty of viable use cases for ChromeOS in various forms, the important thing is for users to understand what they’re buying, its capabilities and — at least compared to user expectations — limitations. As someone who has a lot of their daily life in Google systems, I’m really happy with what the Google Chromebook Plus has to offer as a daily use device. The reality is that ChromeOS isn’t for everyone with certain programs not being available on the platform, despite Android apps being available, some limitations and a lack of support in certain environments. At $1,099.00 it’s not a your $600.00 special from the big retailers, but with the potential for up to 10 years of automatic updates until June 2032; there’s plenty of computing left in these for users who fit the bill and for them this is a great every day companion.

My experience using Chromebooks has been good, especially for web-based tasks like browsing and working with Google apps; for these web tasks, I prefer Chromebooks over my Mac. However, the software support is limited compared to Windows and Mac. Overall, If your daily tasks revolve around web browsing, using Google apps, and light gaming and using Android apps, the ASUS Chromebook CX34 is the perfect choice. It offers excellent performance with the Intel Core i5 processor. It also comes with a sturdy build quality, good battery life with fast charging support, a good selection of ports, and a free one-year Google One Premium plan, which includes Gemini Advanced and frequent updates to the chromeOS.

Is the ASUS Chromebook Plus CX34 the right tool for you? That’s a question only you can answer, there’s a reason I mentioned that several times in this review. It’s very important that you realize how Chrome OS works before you go for it. This machine is powerful enough to do pretty much anything on Chrome OS, and if you’re happy with what Chrome OS, Linux, and Android have to offer in terms of apps/programs, this machine may be right for you. The price tag is just right, in my opinion, and I actually liked the ASUS Chromebook Plus CX34 more than I thought I would. It’s not the prettiest, slimmest, or most powerful Chromebook out there, but it’s a powerful budget machine, that’s for sure.

So, should you buy this one? When all the Chromebook Plus models get the experience right, why would you pick this one over the others. For one, the MSRP is pretty good. It sits at $399 most days, and that is on the low end of the Chromebook Plus spectrum. But there are constantly deals on devices like the Lenovo Chromebook Flex 5i that get it below $400, and on a basic level, that’s a better overall Chromebook. Similarly, the Lenovo Slim 3i is better all around than the ASUS CX54 and it dips below $400 from time to time, too. Neither of those are very flashy though, and that’s what the ASUS CX54 really has going for it. If you prefer your Chromebook Plus with a bit more visual flair, this one could be the better choice for you. After all, each of these Chromebook Plus devices are pretty great to use in most situations, so if you’re into the all-white chassis of this one, I’d say go for it and you won’t be disappointed.

For less than $400 the CX34 is a real solid work or study machine. This should appeal to businesses that want uniformed Chromebooks that won't push them over the budget – work gets done on this machine and it looks cool. Comfortable keyboard, snappy processor, clever controls, and more AI features coming, what is not to like? Well, for starters, there is the less-than-fantastic display and the cheap overall feel, plus also that stodgy trackpad. The CX34 is not without fault. However, this is the most affordable of the first cohort of Chromebook Plus laptops, and at just $399 we do mean budget. The other models from Acer, Lenovo, and HP are all above $400 and we can safely assume more expensive devices will come out over the next few months or years. So the Asus Chromebook Plus CX34 is the runt of the litter, but only in price.

The introduction of the Chromebook Plus range at first to me seemed like a bit of a gimmick. However, using the Asus Chromebook Plus CX34 proves they genuinely are appetising options for those wanting a great all-round Chromebook experience. The Chromebook Plus CX34 offers a good port selection, with sensible placement, as well as an excellent keyboard with great white backlighting. Its trackpad is also of a decent size, while the display on offer is good enough for day-to-day workloads with reasonable brightness and detail. The battery life on offer is also excellent. If you’re after a solid all-round conventional Chromebook for a reasonable price, this Asus Chromebook Plus CX34 is an excellent choice for the price. The Lenovo IdeaPad 5i Chromebook offers the same spec sheet, but just with a bigger screen for a lot more, while the likes of the Acer Chromebook Spin 514 (2022) bring 2-in-1 functionality. What it boils down to is this: The Asus Chromebook Plus CX34 is a powerful, reasonably priced everyday laptop. The pearl white minimalist chassis is beautiful and sophisticated, and the 1080p display is lovely to binge watch your favorite shows on. The keyboard is effortlessly easy to get used to and the 1080p webcam will make you look good on work calls. Plus, battery life is just over 12 hours and performance is both zippy and reliable. While the audio could definitely be better, a criticism I have of most laptops, it wouldn’t dissuade me personally from buying this laptop. The Asus Chromebook Plus CX34 is an exciting debut for the new Chromebook Plus concept — and it shows that even with all these extra bells and whistles, a very nice Chromebook still doesn’t need to break the bank.

These features are built in to the platform level, which means they’ll work with Meet, Zoom, or whatever app you’re using. I did run into one complication, which is that the Plus controls don’t always seem to be communicating with meeting software’s local controls. During one video chat, I instinctively used the blur setting within Google Meet to blur my background. I wasn’t then able to un-blur my background from the Plus menu; I had to do that in the Meet app. Still, this is a much easier process than I’m used to. On many laptops, you have to dive into some not-very-good app and choose between a dizzying assortment of different lighting and microphone settings in order to achieve these same ends. But if there’s one thing ChromeOS is really good at, it’s simplifying.

Chromebooks have enjoyed a sizable footprint in the laptop world for several years, but Google has just upped its game. The Asus Chromebook Plus CX34 ($399) is one of the cheaper systems in a batch of new so-called "Chromebook Plus" models that are included in Google's latest push to improve Chromebooks. The CX34 and other Plus systems all meet basic hardware spec requirements for better features and performance across the board than most ChromeOS laptops have delivered, like bigger, brighter 1080p displays, increased RAM allotments, and a revamped version of the ChromeOS software. But the Asus Chromebook Plus CX34 impressed us by including all of these features at an extremely affordable price. In a season that's seen many manufacturers jack up prices for minimal improvement, the new Chromebooks look like that much a better value, and this one earns our Editors' Choice nomination for budget Chromebooks.

The updated Asus Chromebook Plus CX34 is an excellent pick for shoppers looking to spend around $400 on a Chromebook. It provides an enjoyable keyboard and touchpad, many ports, and seriously competitive performance for way less than some competing models. That’s not to say it’s perfect. The CX34 lost ground on battery life, and the fine display doesn't stand out any longer. Shoppers who want the top-most Chromebook need to shell out for an Acer Chromebook 516 GE or Framework Chromebook 13 with sharper displays and larger batteries. However, when it comes to the mix of features and performance for a specific price with mass appeal, like $500 or lower, the Asus Chromebook Plus CX34 remains unmatched.
